How to Pick a Right Tarot Deck?

Updated: Apr 5, 2023

To start with- is there a right deck? There are definitely decks that are more and less popular, but the amount available on the market now is unbelievable and choices vary from classic decks with pretty modest and general artwork to decks, that are based on Unicorns or cartoon characters...to be honest you can probably find a Tarot deck based on pretty much anything you can think of. So which one is the one then...

Choosing What Works

Majority of resources will say that Raider Waite Smith deck is a much have for learning, especially now you don't have to get a classic one if the colours of images don't work for you, there is a huge amount so called Waite-Smith based. I personally have a version with much softer colours and is called Universal Raider Waite tarot. To be hones majority of my Tarot decks are Raider Waite based - these just work better for me. The main reason why majority of Tarot readers refer to Raider Waite Tarot as a learning deck is because majority of books will be based exactly on that deck and with refer to its symbolism and information on it is widely accessible. I can honestly say this deck works well for me and use it the most and good for any questions.

Any Reasons to Have Multiple Decks

This is purely up to a reader. There are some people who don't read Tarot at all but collect decks for their beauty and artwork. To begin with I started collecting decks, well... I though I honestly needed them, but then realised that majority I didn't use and likely worn't be using them, so I sold them and only kept the ones I work with regularly apart from two- these are just too beautiful so I kept them.

Is There different decks for Different Topics?

Let's be fair, you can get away with just one... maximum two if you are doing a really big reading and want lots of extra cards. I prefer to use different deck for different topics and sometimes I also feel like picking different deck for some querent...saying that my main Tarot deck will still remain my Universal Raider-Waite. I just find it easy and good connection with.

Here is my working Tarot decks

I think I will put them in order of my preferences and describe what I use them for and maybe it will help you pick for yourself

ree

Universal Raider Waite Tarot

Love using this deck and use it for everything. This one is my to go to deck and the one I always use for new clients as I trust it best and the answers are normally straight to the point.

ree

Puppet Theatre Tarot

this one is not very popular, however is a very nice and thoughtfully made deck. The author (Maria Kurara) deeply know the Tarot system and it is followed well, showing slightly different aspects adding more colours to a reading. I use this deck as a top up for relationship readings, so as other topics but mainly that.

ree

Light Seers Tarot

this deck is absolutely stunning. Artwork is amazing, the card stock is very live to have in hand, though readers with tiny hands might struggle as the deck is quite thick. This deck I find prefect for love readings and I will also use it for people who are sensitive and with good imagination, as all the cards in Light Seers Tarot are very gentle and hardly scary at all, though their meanings are almost identical to classic deck it leaves it up to a reader to deliver the message in a gentle manner.

ree

Everyday Witch Tarot.

this one is totally Raider Waite based deck, but it is really vibrant and images are very easy to read. It also have tiny details aded to each card that can make reading more detailed, depending on your level of intuitiveness. I often use it for general readings and for cases when querent just want a reading but not sure what to ask or how to ask.

ree

Nicoletta Ceccolli Tarot

This deck has beautiful images and very nice and soft colours. This deck though has an Oracle touch to it. Some arcana has different meanings from classics and you will need learning this deck kinda separately. I would not recommend this one as a 1st Tarot deck but it very handy to have when you read into psychological issues, traumas and toxic relationships.

ree

Yin Yang Tarot by Maria Kurara

very interesting and not that usual concept follows in this deck. There is a whole theory and again lots of deep Tarot knowledge in this deck, to me I final similarities in this one Thoth Tarot by A. Crowley so as Puppet Theatre Tarot have a bit of that feel too. This deck I mainly use for relationship reading, for people who are looking for self growth and finding balance. I don't often use it as main deck but often as a top up one.

ree

Pagan Tarot

This lovely deck was given to me and I love it. I wish I used it more often. For me this deck works best for carrier and work related questions. Images are really self explaining there. This deck also brilliant when question relates to finding the right path. Probably not getting used much as I don't get asked these things very often, though would have been nice

ree

Thoth Tarot

Not adding this one to the end of my decks. I only put it here as I am still learning this deck and for some reasons I find to understand it much harder that I have anticipated. At the moment I am trying to get through another book that was written on that deck, but I am definitely not ready to perform a proper reading using Thoth Tarot. I am truly hoping another few months and I will going enough confidence to be able to use it, but will take me good few years to learn it in depth as it deserve to.

ree

Black Cats Tarot

I love the colours on this deck and black cats of course. I have one myself. I like using this deck when I do readings for pets and readings when I want messages to be presented in a nice way not to hard on a querent. This deck is very close to classic Raider Waite but has its own details to add to the reading and some of the cards have different meanings .

Two Decks that I love for their Artwork but ...

ree

ree

Dark Mansion Tarot and Golden Art Nouvea

Both of these Tarot deck are just stunning. Both Classic based but for some reason I hardly use them, like pretty much not at all. The reason for it is... Well actually not particular reason...Maybe I will grow into them

And the verdict is...

Just go with your heart, head, intuition or whatever else you call it when getting your first or next or deck number100 something. Only person reading cards or having cards can decide what deck is right for them and what amount they would love to have. There is no right or wrong, there is no limits either. Don't let anyone or anything to put these limits on you!
